Linking Voice Assistants to TruLight

Connect Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri to control your TruLight lights with voice commands.

This module walks you through linking your voice assistant — Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri — to your TruLight system. By the end, you'll be able to turn your lights on and off, and control them by name, using just your voice.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Navigate to the voice assistant settings inside the TruLight app
  2. Link your Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri account to TruLight
  3. Assign your TruLight device to a home and room so voice commands work correctly
  4. Control your lights by voice using a custom device name

Finding Voice Assistant Settings in the App

2 minutesVideo: 0:00-0:22

Where to find the voice assistant options inside the TruLight app and which assistants are supported.

Key Concepts

The "Me" Button

On the very first screen of the TruLight app, look at the bottom right corner. You'll see a profile icon — this is the "Me" button. Tap it to open your account options. This is where all the voice assistant integrations live.

Supported Voice Assistants

Once inside, you'll see three options: Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts. All three are supported — you can link one or all of them depending on what smart home ecosystem you use. Most homes use one primary assistant, so just pick the one that matches yours.

Action Step

Open TruLight right now and tap the "Me" button in the bottom right corner. Confirm you can see the Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts options. Don't tap anything yet — just make sure you know where they are.

Linking Your Voice Assistant Account

5 minutesVideo: 0:22-0:52

How to complete the account linking process between TruLight and your voice assistant — using Google Assistant as the example.

Key Concepts

Starting the Link

Tap your voice assistant of choice — in this example, Google Assistant. The app will prompt you to link accounts. Tap the link button to begin. TruLight will automatically open your Google Home app (or the relevant assistant app) to handle the authorization.

Authorizing the Connection

Your assistant app will ask: "Would you like to link this account?" Tap Continue, then Agree and Link. Google will then ask one more time to confirm permissions — tap Yes. This two-step confirmation is normal and just means both apps are verifying the connection is intentional.

Selecting Your Device

After authorization, TruLight will display the devices connected to your account. If you have more than one, you'll see them all listed. Tap the one you want to link to this voice assistant and tap Next.

Action Step

Go through the full linking process right now for your preferred voice assistant. Tap the assistant in TruLight, confirm both permission prompts, and select your device. Stop after selecting the device — the next lesson covers the room assignment step.

Assigning Your Device and Using Voice Commands

3 minutesVideo: 0:52-1:19

How to assign your TruLight device to a home and room, name it, and start using voice commands to control your lights.

Key Concepts

Assigning to a Home

After selecting your device, your assistant app will ask which home it belongs to. If you have multiple addresses or locations set up, choose the correct one. Most users only have one home, so this step is quick.

Assigning to a Room

Next, you'll be asked which room or area this device belongs to. Type in something descriptive — "Outside," "Front Yard," "Backyard," or whatever matches your setup. This is important because room names become part of your voice commands. If you call it "Outside," you can later say "Hey Google, turn off Outside."

Naming Your Device and Using Voice Commands

Once assigned, your device will show a name — you can change this to anything you want. The name you give it is exactly what you'll say in your voice commands. For example, if you name it "TruLight," you'd say "Hey Google, turn on TruLight." Choose a name that's easy to say and remember. Once it shows as on, your voice assistant is live and ready.

Action Step

Complete the room assignment now — type in the area name that matches where your lights are installed. Then try your first voice command: "Hey [Google/Alexa/Siri], turn on [your device name]." Confirm the lights respond.

Summary

What You Learned:

  • The "Me" button in the bottom right of TruLight is where all voice assistant integrations live
  • Linking requires approving two permission prompts — one from TruLight and one from your assistant app
  • The room name and device name you choose become your actual voice commands, so pick names that feel natural
  • Once linked, you can turn your lights on and off with a simple voice command

Next Steps:

Now that your lights respond to voice commands, explore setting up Timers to automate your lighting schedule — so your lights come on at sunset and off at a set time, every day, without any manual input or voice command needed.
